At Canford School, we believe in making science fun and accessible, allowing our younger students to explore the wonders of the natural world through interactive experiments and exciting discoveries. Whether you’re interested in biology, chemistry, or physics, this course will spark your curiosity and inspire a lifelong love of science.

Module 1: Discover the Living World

In this module, you’ll explore the amazing diversity of life on Earth. You’ll learn about different ecosystems, the basics of cell biology, and how living organisms interact with their environment. Through simple experiments and observations, you’ll start to understand the building blocks of life and how they contribute to the world around us.

Module 2: Exploring Matter and Energy

This module introduces you to the basic principles of chemistry and physics. You’ll discover what matter is made of, how substances change, and the different forms of energy. Fun and safe experiments will help you see these principles in action, from chemical reactions to exploring how energy is used in everyday life.

Module 3: The Wonders of Space and Earth

In the final module, you’ll embark on a journey through space and time. You’ll learn about the solar system, the Earth’s structure, and the forces that shape our planet. Through engaging activities, you’ll explore the mysteries of space, understand the basics of geology, and discover how science helps us understand the universe.

Time to Shine

For your Time to Shine project, you will embark on an extended research project focused on a scientific topic that intrigues you. This project will give you the opportunity to dive deep into your chosen field, apply scientific methods, and present your findings to peers and instructors. It’s a chance to showcase your analytical skills, creativity, and understanding of complex scientific principles.

Examples of past projects include:

F1 Engineering Challenge
With your team of fellow race engineers, you will be responsible for designing, analysing and building an F1 car of the future to a certain set of specifications. Once built, test its aerodynamics and evaluate the most efficient car possible, refining it so it travels as quickly as possible. You will then create a pit display that showcases your work throughout all stages of the project, whilst your cars are carefully evaluated by a team of judges who will question you on how your car was manufactured and why your design was chosen. And then it will come down to the moment of truth: the race! Experience the thrill of watching your car power down a racetrack as you compete against the other groups in your class in front of the rest of the school. Do you have what it takes to design and build a competition-winning F1 car?
