Our two-week Art & Design course is perfect for aspiring artists and designers who are eager to explore their creativity and refine their craft. The course is structured around hands-on learning. You will spend your time in the studio, where you’ll engage in projects that range from drawing and painting to sculpture and digital design. Welcome to the Art and Design programme at Rochester Independent College, a creative haven for students aged 12-15 who are passionate about expressing themselves through art. Our programme is designed to inspire and nurture young artists by providing a diverse range of artistic experiences.
Whether you’re interested in drawing, painting, sculpture, or digital design, this course offers the perfect opportunity to explore your creativity, develop your skills, and discover your unique artistic voice.
Module 1: Drawing and Painting Fundamentals
In this module, you’ll start with the basics of drawing and painting, learning essential techniques that form the foundation of any artist’s skill set. You’ll explore various materials such as pencils, charcoal, watercolors, and acrylics, and experiment with different styles and approaches. Through guided exercises and personal projects, you’ll develop your observational skills and learn how to translate what you see onto paper or canvas with confidence and creativity.
Module 2: Exploring 3D Art
This module invites you to step into the world of three-dimensional art. You’ll work with materials like clay, plaster, and found objects to create your own sculptures and installations. Module 3: Introduction to Digital Design

For your Time to Shine project, you will create a unique and expressive piece of art or design that reflects the skills and concepts you’ve developed during the course. This project is your opportunity to showcase your creativity, technical ability, and personal artistic vision. Whether you choose to produce a painting, a digital artwork, a piece of graphic design, or a mixed-media installation, your project will culminate in a presentation where you’ll discuss your process, inspiration, and the message behind your work.
Time to Shine
Examples of past projects include: “Urban Landscapes: A Study in Contrast and Composition” – A project where a student created a series of digital illustrations exploring the juxtaposition of nature and cityscapes, focusing on composition, color theory, and thematic depth. This project allows you to bring your artistic ideas to life, presenting your work to an audience while demonstrating your growth as an artist and your ability to communicate visually and verbally.
