Breaking Digital

Are you interested in a future career in journalism or content creation?

This two week programme is designed to equip students with the skills and know-how to critically challenge and interpret information, data and news in order to arrive at a balanced view on global ‘big issues’.

The course will also teach students how best to communicate creatively their own ideas and opinions to the widest target audience.

This course is ideal for inquisitive, knowledgeable students who value autonomous thought but who love cooperating in vibrant teams. Students will use their technological proficiency to produce text, audio, and video content that will spark discussions on politics, culture, and society.

Breaking Digital

What's Included?

  • Academic

    20 hours of subject-specific academic content per week with an experienced subject tutor, delivered through interactive seminars and hands-on practical workshops

  • Social Programme and Excursions

    Students will enjoy full-day trips on Wednesdays and Sundays. Visits can include world-famous cathedral city of Canterbury and Central London

  • Course Report and Certificate

    All students receive an end-of-course academic report and certificate for attending

  • Airport Transfers

    Our course includes airport transfers from Gatwick and Heathrow

What you'll learn

This course is perfect for curious, well-informed students who think independently yet enjoy working collaboratively in dynamic teams. Students will harness technical skills in creating video, audio and text output to bring political, cultural and social discussion to the table.

Topics include:

    • Breaking Text: Focusing on print media and article writing, this project replicates the hustle and bustle of a newsroom through a series of investigative journalism assignments. Students will create newspaper articles and podcasts involving real-life interviews with the public, other students, and staff. Additionally, students will act as ‘reporters’ at the Think Global debates.
    • Breaking Sound: Expanding the focus to issues within the 21st-century media landscape, this project involves collaboration to create a podcast focusing on global current affairs.
    • Breaking Image: Exploring the power of imagery, this project teaches how to evoke feelings and reactions in social media, journalism, and marketing.

Earlscliffe Breaking Digital FAQs

How challenging is Breaking Digital?

Although the Breaking Digital course is designed to stretch students’ abilities, our tutors are trained and supported by our academic staff in modifying the level of challenge if necessary. At SBC we are experienced in providing an inclusive learning environment and do all we can to help students.

What level of English is required for the course?

To study in Breaking Digital, you must have a level of B2 or higher, else you may find the input of the course too challenging.

Do students receive a certificate at Earlscliffe?

Everyone who completes the programme receives a certificate of completion at our graduation ceremony at the end of the programme.

Do students require a course book?

Our very own academic team has produced a selection of SBC handouts, which are distributed to students throughout the programme.

What do students need to take to class?

To take part in class students require their own pens. Notebooks and folders are provided.

Is there anything that students are required to read or study before classes start?

It is not necessary to complete any required reading before Breaking Digital starts, however it is always recommended to students to continue improving their English if it helps them to feel more at ease.
