Exploring the Fabric of Society

Our two-week Social Sciences course is ideal for students who are curious about the dynamics of human behaviour, social structures, and the forces that influence societal change. This program offers an in-depth exploration of key disciplines within the social sciences, providing you with the tools to analyze and understand the world around you.

Course Objectives

Welcome to the Social Sciences programme at Rochester Independent College, designed for curious students aged 12-15 who are eager to explore the world around them. Our programme provides an engaging introduction to the key concepts in psychology, sociology, and anthropology, helping you understand how individuals and societies function. Through interactive lessons, discussions, and projects, you’ll gain insights into human behaviour, social structures, and cultural diversity, laying the groundwork for further study in the social sciences.

Module 1: Introduction to Psychology

In this module, you’ll explore the fascinating world of psychology, learning about how the mind works and why people behave the way they do. You’ll cover topics such as perception, memory, and emotions, and engage in simple experiments and activities that demonstrate psychological principles in action. By the end of this module, you’ll have a better understanding of yourself and others, and a foundation in the basics of psychological science.

 

Module 2: Understanding Society Through Sociology

This module introduces you to the study of society and social behaviour. You’ll explore how social structures, cultural norms, and institutions shape the way people live and interact with one another. Social

Programme Highlights

For your Time to Shine project, you will conduct an in-depth analysis or research project on a social issue or phenomenon that fascinates you. This project will allow you to apply the theories and methods you’ve learned during the course, culminating in a presentation where you’ll share your insights and demonstrate your understanding of complex social dynamics. Whether you choose to explore topics like the effects of social media on youth behaviour, the impact of economic policies on inequality, or the role of culture in shaping identity, this project will showcase your ability to critically analyze and communicate your findings effectively.

Time to Shine

Examples of past projects include:

“The Influence of Pop Culture on Social Movements”

A project where a student examined how music, film, and social media have influenced contemporary social movements, using sociological theories and data to support their analysis.

This project offers you the opportunity to delve into a topic of interest, engage in critical thinking, and present your conclusions in a clear and compelling manner, demonstrating your proficiency in the social sciences.

    20 hours of subject-specific academic content per week with an experienced subject tutor, delivered through interactive and hands-on lessons

  • Time to Shine projects

    Opportunities to apply and share this knowledge through dynamic ‘Time To Shine’ group projects, culminating in an end-of-the-week ceremony in which you can present your innovative ideas to your peers.

  • Excursions

    With the captial only a short distance away, students will benefit from two excursions into London where they will explore the exciting attractions the capital has to offer.

  • Social Programme

    Our social programme fosters friendship and community through engaging activities such as sports, arts and crafts, and themed disco nights, creating unforgettable experiences and lasting memories for students.

  • Develop English Language Skills

    Numerous opportunities throughout your academic program to develop your English language skills, whether that’s building vocabulary to talk about your subject, or developing your speaking skills to present your Time To Shine project
